As a binder, PVDF securely bonds cathode active materials (e.g., LiCoO₂, NCM, LFP), conductive agents (e.g., carbon black, graphene) and aluminum foil current collectors into a uniform electrode coating, ensuring efficient electron conduction, reducing electrode impedance and minimizing polarization.
PVDF is chemically inert towards electrolytes during charge‑discharge, preventing side reactions. Its wide electrochemical stability window (>4.5 V vs. Li⁺/Li) makes it suitable for high‑voltage cathode materials, including Ni‑rich ternary systems.
The binder also accommodates volume changes of cathode materials during cycling, alleviating stress to prevent cracking and delamination. By maintaining high adhesion between the electrode coating and the current collector, PVDF extends cycle life.
Additionally, PVDF enables a uniform, dense electrode coating with controlled porosity, which optimizes ion‑transport paths and reduces current‑density non‑uniformity, thereby lowering polarization and improving power output.
